Finasteride is used to treat men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and male pattern hair loss, also called androgenetic alopecia. BPH is caused by an enlarged prostate. Men with BPH usually have difficulty urinating, a decreased flow of urination, hesitation at the beginning of urination, and a need to get up at night to urinate. Finasteride will make these symptoms less severe and reduce the chance that prostate surgery will be needed. It may be used alone or in combination with other medicines such as an alpha-blocker to treat BPH. For men with hair loss, finasteride will increase the number of scalp hairs but will not increase the amount of body hair.

Finasteride blocks the action of an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase. This enzyme changes testosterone to another hormone that causes the prostate to grow or hair loss in males. It will increase testosterone levels in the body, which decreases prostate size and increases hair growth on the scalp. The effect of finasteride on the prostate and scalp will only last as long as the medicine is taken. When it is stopped, the prostate begins to grow again and the hair will be lost.

Medication Information: Proscar (Finasteride)

Uses of Proscar:

In adult men, Proscar is used to decrease an enlarged prostate (also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH). It can be used alone or in combination with other medications to alleviate BPH symptoms and possibly avoid surgery. Proscar (Finasteride) may help with BPH symptoms by reducing the need to urinate, improving urine flow with less straining, reducing the sense that the bladder isn't empty, and reducing overnight urination.

This medication works by lowering the quantity of DHT, a natural body hormone that drives prostate growth. Proscar isn't approved for prostate cancer prevention. It may raise the risk of acquiring a very dangerous form of prostate cancer by a small amount.

How to use Proscar?

  • Take this medication by mouth once a day, with or without food, as instructed by your doctor.
  • A pregnant woman or a woman who may become pregnant should not handle the tablet if it has been crushed or broken.
  • To receive the best benefit from this medication, take it daily. It's important to remember to use it at the same time every day.
  • It could take 6 to 12 months for you to observe a difference. If your illness does not improve or worsen, contact your doctor.

Side Effects of Proscar:

  • You may lose your sexual ability or desire. This medicine may reduce the volume of semen released during intercourse in certain men.
  • Proscar may also help you develop more hair.
  • Serious side effects include such as a lump in your breast, nipple discharge, breast enlargement/tenderness/pain, testicular pain, or inability to pee.
  • If you detect any symptoms of a major allergic response, such as a rash, itching/swelling (particularly of the face/tongue/throat), extreme dizziness, or problems breathing, seek medical treatment right away.

Proscar Precautions:

  • If you are allergic to finasteride or have any other allergies, notify your doctor or pharmacist before taking it. Inactive chemicals may be included in this product, causing allergic reactions or other issues. For further information, speak with your pharmacist.
  • Tell your doctor or pharmacist about your medical history, especially if you have liver disease, prostate cancer, infections, or urinary issues, before using this medication.
  • Through the skin, the medicine can be absorbed. A woman who is pregnant or trying to become pregnant should not touch a tablet if the film coating has been damaged or the tablet has been crushed. Proscar exposure in a developing male child can cause genital malformations.
  • Proscar should not be used by women, especially if they are pregnant or nursing. It has the potential to harm an unborn or nursing baby. If you have any questions regarding this medication, talk to your doctor.

Hi, I've been using a 5mg daily dose of proscar and I'm getting a bit nauseous. I've started the Proscar (5mg) and I've noticed that my hair is starting to fall out more, especially around my neck.

Any thoughts?

P. S. I have been taking 5mg and I've been getting really odd side effects from this. Any advice?

Thanks a lot, I've got to go. I'm on 5mg (and still can't figure out why).

August 22, 2008, 5:16am

I've started Proscar 2 years ago but it's been a while since I started to notice the changes.

August 22, 2008, 7:44am

I've been on Proscar and I'm not very good at this. I've never had a reaction to this before as I've never had side effects.

Thank you!

I've been on Proscar and it's been the worst ever. I'm also on Propecia. I'm also on the 1mg and I've noticed a couple of 'hits' in my hair. When I started taking the Proscar, they were very odd. I've been taking Propecia at 2mg a day for the first couple of weeks and they're still fine. My hair keeps fallow and I'm able to keep it all on time. I've been on the Proscar and it's been quite the difference since I first started taking the Proscar. I haven't noticed any changes since. Is there a better way?

August 23, 2008, 1:03am4

I've been on Proscar and it's been the worst. I started to see some changes on top of my hair. It's a little annoying, but not a lot of it. I've started to notice that it's getting worse. I've started to notice that I'm getting a bit "normal". It's very uncomfortable, and I'm worried that it might be the side effects. I'm not sure if it's the finasteride, or if it's the Proscar. Does anyone have any advice?

August 24, 2008, 9:26am

Proscar is not the right dose for you. The 5mg/day is the best dose for me. I have had several issues and the side effects have only made me worse. I also noticed some of the side effects have gone away.

Thanks again for all your help. I'll look into it.

August 24, 2008, 10:31am

Thanks for all the advice!

August 25, 2008, 5:31am3

You're welcome, I'll give you a call and we can talk about something else. Thanks again.

August 25, 2008, 12:04pm

I've been taking Proscar and I'm getting a bit of a 'headaches'. I'm now trying to get a hair transplant and I'm worried that it's causing some side effects. I'll give it a try if you need it.
